When will the next Household Hazardous Waste Collection (HHW Collection) be held?
Typically the collection is held every other year in the Spring. The collection in Sangamon County will take place on April 12th, 2008. For a listing of all scheduled events please visit the IEPA Bureau of Land.
Why doesn't the HHW Collection accept latex paint?
Latex paint is not considered hazardous, but it should be solid before throwing it away. If the can is nearly empty remove the lid and let the paint dry. (Keep paint away from pets or children.)
To speed up the process or solidify a larger amount of paint, pour sawdust or kitty litter into the can to absorb the paint. Once the paint is dried out, the can may be thrown away with your regular garbage.
If you have a large amount of paint, that is still useable, contact a local charity (such as Habitat for Humanity) about a donation.
Is it legal to burn in Sangamon County?
Many villages ban or limit burning due to annoying smoke and health concerns. Even the smoke from burning leaves can make it difficult for someone with asthma or other respiratory conditions to breathe.
Check with your village or township before assuming it is ok to burn yard waste.
Illinois law PROHIBITS the burning of the following:
Food waste, food packaging, construction or demolition debris, furniture, tires, trade waste (waste generated by a business) or ANYTHING else that creates air pollution.
Burning any prohibited items is illegal, even if you live in an unincorporated area. Villages and townships can NOT burn any prohibited items without a special permit from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. To report illegal burning call SCDPH at 535-3100.
Burning contributes to air pollution, can contaminate soil and can impact your health. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency identifies burn barrels as the most significant source of dioxin in the U.S. Read the Illinois Department of Public Health fact sheet about dioxin to learn about possible health effects.
